Dental Crowns
The first treatment option for a cavity is a filling. However, deeper decay extending beyond 1/3 rd of the tooth structure may require a dental crown. A dental crown is a custom made cap that fits over the tooth to restore it to natural function. Broken, cracked, or decayed teeth may require a dental crown.
Getting a dental crown begins with an examination by Dr. Mary Senstad. Dr. Mary will assess the tooth and its condition. If a crown is necessary, the tooth is prepared by shaping the outer structure to create space for the crown. This may involve building the tooth up if it's severely damaged.
After the tooth is prepared, an intraoral scan of the tooth and surrounding teeth are taken. These scans are sent to a dental laboratory where the crown will be custom-made to fit the tooth. While the permanent crown is being fabricated, a temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth to protect it and maintain its appearance and function.
Once the permanent crown is ready, the temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is fitted, adjusted, and cemented or bonded into place.
Dental crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, gold, or a mixture of materials. The choice of material depends on factors such as the location of the tooth, aesthetic preferences, and functional requirements.
Dental crowns offer several benefits, including:
Restoring the strength and integrity of a damaged or weakened tooth.
Protecting a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy or has a large filling.
Improving the appearance of a misshapen or discolored tooth.
Enhancing the overall function and longevity of the tooth.
Dental Bridges
A dental bridge is a a nonremovable treatment option to replace one or more missing teeth. A bridge consists of one or more artificial teeth (pontics) that are attached to dental crowns (abutments) on either side of the gap.The teeth adjacent to the gap are prepared by removing a portion of their enamel to accommodate the dental crowns that will support the bridge. If there are no suitable natural teeth available, dental implants or a removable partial may be an option.
Once the abutment teeth are prepared, impressions or a digital scan of the teeth and surrounding tissues are taken. These impressions or scans are used to fabricate the custom-made bridge in a dental laboratory. While the laboratory is fabricating the permanent bridge, a temporary bridge is placed to protect the prepared teeth and maintain proper function.
Once the permanent bridge is ready, it is tried in to ensure fitted and cemented or bonded into place by Dr. Mary Senstad.
Dental bridges offer several benefits, including:
Restoring the ability to chew and speak properly.
Maintaining the alignment of surrounding teeth and preventing them from shifting out of position.
Improving the appearance of the smile by filling in gaps left by missing teeth.
It is important to note that dental bridges require proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups to ensure their longevity and maintain oral health.
